On Stage: Mark Ramos shares his knowledge about innovation through enterprise architecture in a compelling presentation.
On Day Two of the Digital Transformation through Enterprise Architecture (DTEA) Conference 2024, Mark Ramos, Head of Enterprise Architecture and Innovation at MERALCO, delivered a powerful presentation on the role of enterprise architecture in fostering innovation.
A Vision for Sustainable Growth
Mark opened with a brief overview of MERALCO’s journey, emphasizing its mission to evolve beyond energy distribution. With a clear focus on sustainable growth and development, he highlighted the company’s continuous pursuit of innovative solutions that enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.
Why Innovation Matters
Reflecting on the importance of innovation, Mark drew on historical examples like the wheel, electricity, and the internet, illustrating how these groundbreaking inventions have reshaped industries and society. He connected this to the modern business world, where enterprise architecture (EA) is a key enabler for product, process, and technological innovation. MERALCO’s enterprise architecture is designed to support the company’s mission and vision, ensuring continuous improvement across the organization.
Aligning Enterprise Architecture with Business Goals
A crucial part of MERALCO’s EA strategy is aligning IT initiatives with business objectives. Mark discussed how, with Gartner’s guidance, MERALCO transitioned from a technology-centric approach to one that integrates business needs into IT projects. This shift was formalized through a one-pager strategy document that outlines the company’s EA mission, vision, business outcomes, competencies, and KPIs. A business capability map now guides IT portfolio management, ensuring projects deliver tangible value.
Demonstrating Value: Enterprise Architecture Beyond Cost
Enterprise architecture is often seen as a financial burden, but Mark emphasized how it can enhance cost efficiency and business performance. By implementing a base-layered application strategy, MERALCO supports adaptive governance aimed at achieving its strategic goals, known as the 4Ds. This approach not only aligns IT with business outcomes but also showcases how EA drives value and innovation.
Innovations Shaping MERALCO’s Digital Transformation
Mark highlighted some of MERALCO’s recent innovations, including a meter-reading app that ensures timely and accurate readings, the Customer Account Number (CAN) system simplifying payments and inquiries, and proactive billing notifications for over 2 million customers. Additionally, AI-driven Digital Grid detection uses GIS mapping to optimize solar panel load monitoring, while Robotic Process Automation (RPA) saved the company 3.4 million pesos in man-hours.
Empowering Subsidiaries through Enterprise Architecture
Beyond MERALCO, the company’s subsidiaries have also benefited from its EA framework, which provides tailored roadmaps for innovation. Mark emphasized that half of his team works within an innovation lab (PIXL – Powertech Innov and Experience Lab), focusing on emerging technologies like AR, VR, and digital twins. These innovations improve safety and efficiency by allowing employees to simulate real-world scenarios without physically visiting substations.
The Road Ahead: Expanding from 4Ds to 7Ds
Building on its success, MERALCO has expanded its strategic focus from the 4Ds to the 7Ds, embarking on a renewed digital transformation journey over the next four to five years. In 2022, the company was recognized by The Open Group for its excellence in leveraging digital technologies to enhance customer satisfaction.
Incentivizing Renewable Energy: The Role of EA
During the Q&A session, a delegate inquired about MERALCO’s incentivization of customers with solar panels. Mark explained that the EA team supports the company’s net-metering program, which provides separate meters for renewable energy users. Through collaboration with the business development team, they are continuously integrating new technologies to enhance the initiative.
Collaboration and Governance: Keys to Success
Before closing, Mark discussed how his team is empowered to govern the architecture effectively. By reviewing all RFPs and RFCs, the EA team ensures that the right solutions are chosen to align with business goals, not to stifle innovation. Collaboration with C-level executives has been instrumental in helping decision-makers see the value of EA and choose solutions that support the company’s long-term vision.
In your experience, how can enterprise architecture teams best collaborate with business leaders to ensure innovation aligns with strategic goals?
