An In-Depth Look at The Open Group and the TOGAF Standard 10th Edition

On July 25, 2024, at the DTEA Conference, Chris Forde, the General Manager for the Asia Pacific Region and Vice President of Enterprise Architecture at The Open Group, as well as the CEO of the Association of Enterprise Architects (AEA), shared significant updates regarding The Open Group and the TOGAF Standard 10th Edition. These updates reflect the ongoing evolution in enterprise architecture and the important role that TOGAF plays in guiding organizations through their digital transformation journeys.

Ecosystems Architecture in the Age of AI

One of the highlights of Chris Forde’s presentation was the call for industry collaboration on open standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI) professional practice. In the rapidly changing landscape of AI, new approaches are necessary for Enterprise Architecture (EA) practitioners. The Open Group’s book, “Ecosystems Architecture,” published in November 2023, serves as a foundational resource for understanding these emerging dynamics. Available for online download, this publication addresses the profound impact AI will have on civil society and professional practices in the coming years.

Additionally, The Open Group has released several white papers to further explore the implications of AI, including “Building Trust in Artificial Intelligence” and “Business Leader’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence.” These documents are essential reading for professionals seeking to understand the intersection of AI and enterprise architecture.

The TOGAF Standard 10th Edition: A Living Framework

Since its initial release, the TOGAF Standard 10th Edition has been recognized for its segmented structure, divided into six fundamental segments collectively known as the Fundamental Content. These core elements have been supplemented by various series guides, which are crucial for practitioners implementing TOGAF in their organizations.

New series guides have been introduced since the original launch, driven by the practical experiences of organizations like AXA. These guides cover topics such as Business Capability Planning, Information Architecture (with a focus on Business Intelligence & Analytics and Metadata Management), and Environmentally Sustainable Information Systems. Chris Forde emphasized that TOGAF is not just a theoretical framework but a professional practice proven in organizations globally, offering immense value to practitioners.

ArchiMate Standard: Preparing for the Future

The Open Group is currently preparing a bug feedback campaign for ArchiMate 3.2, inviting both members and non-members to contribute their insights. This feedback will be instrumental in shaping the planned new release and will contribute to a technical corrigendum for TOGAF 10 expected later this year. The ongoing updates and refinements to TOGAF and ArchiMate highlight their status as living standards, continually evolving to meet the needs of the industry.

Government EA Work Group: Innovating for Better Citizen Outcomes

The Government EA Work Group is focused on public service innovation, aiming to improve citizen outcomes by sharing best practices in the global use of Enterprise Architecture within government organizations. This includes exploring Integrated Whole-of-Government Paradigms, Federated Approaches and Reference Architectures, and Building and Sustaining Architecture Capability.

The group also supports initiatives aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Digitalization in Government with EA, and the development of a Government Profile for ArchiMate. The Case Compendium, derived from the Open Group India 2023 Awards, includes a notable case study on the National EA and e-Government Interoperability Framework for the Mongolian Government, which has recently completed its forum review process.

IT4IT Framework: New Publications and Guides for 2024

The IT4IT framework continues to be a cornerstone of digital transformation strategies, with several new documents scheduled for publication in 2024. These include four white papers covering topics such as Service Integration and Management (SIAM), Digital Transformation, IT Financial Management, and Asset Management.

The upcoming IT4IT Guides will provide deeper insights into Capacity Management, IT Financial Management, and Asset Management, while a technical corrigendum will ensure that the IT4IT framework remains relevant and up-to-date with industry needs.

Open Value-Based Architecture (O-VBA) for Healthcare

In the healthcare sector, the Open Value-Based Architecture (O-VBA) is gaining traction. A consensus has been developed to advance O-VBA by expanding content from several recent conference papers into a comprehensive snapshot currently under development. The application of TOGAF and ArchiMate to O-VBA is being implemented in healthcare systems across the US, Canada, and the UK, demonstrating the versatility and global applicability of these frameworks.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: Open Footprint and OSDU Standards

As sustainability becomes a top priority across industries, The Open Group has introduced the Open Footprint Data Model Standard, designed to help organizations globally track their carbon impact. This open standard is a valuable tool for those committed to reducing their environmental footprint and contributing to the planet’s future.

The Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) Data Platform Standard aims to minimize the need for drilling in the search for oil and gas by enabling data sharing between key organizations involved in Earth’s geology. This platform, while primarily serving the energy industry, also supports clean energy initiatives, illustrating the interconnectedness of the Open Footprint and OSDU standards.

Open Process Automation: Towards Interoperability and Security

Open Process Automation is focused on defining an open, interoperable, and secure architecture for industrial process automation systems. This initiative uses existing and emerging standards to create a “standard of standards” that can be widely adopted. The product certification program is already operational, leveraging frameworks such as DMTF Redfish, OPC Unified Architecture (UA), and ISASecure.

Security Portfolio: Advancing Risk Management and Trust

The security landscape continues to evolve, with The Open Group advancing its security portfolio through several initiatives. The Open Trusted Technology Forum is working on quantitative supply chain risk management, demonstrating the applicability of Open FAIR (Factor Analysis of Information Risk) in conjunction with the Open Trusted Technology Provider Standard (O-TTPS).

Meanwhile, the Assured Dependability Work Group is integrating the Zero Trust Commandments and Open FAIR Risk Analysis into the Open Dependability through Assuredness (O-DA) Framework, aligning with the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM).

The Security Forum has also made significant progress, with the Zero Trust Commandments Standard entering formal company review and the publication of a white paper on calculating reserves for cyber risk using Open FAIR Risk Analysis. A new Zero Trust Glossary and Roles document is being developed to serve as a single source of truth within the emerging Zero Trust Body of Knowledge.

Open Group Certifications: Expanding Knowledge and Expertise

The Open Group continues to expand its certification portfolio, with ArchiMate certifications approaching 15,000 individuals globally. The TOGAF Certification Portfolio is also growing, with certifications nearing 150,000 across 166 countries. These certifications cover various levels, from TOGAF EA Foundation to specialized credentials like TOGAF Framework Agile Specialist and TOGAF EA Leader.

Looking Ahead: Future Releases and Events

As The Open Group looks to the future, several important releases and events are on the horizon. The Technical Corrigendum 1 for the TOGAF Standard 10th Edition is expected in the fourth quarter of 2024, along with new TOGAF series guides focused on selecting building blocks and defining roles and skills.

The O-AA (Open Agile Architecture) Standard is undergoing a significant update, with a target release later this year. Additionally, the SOA Work Group is working on a guide for Managing Data in Microservices Architecture.

Upcoming events include the NextGen Digital for the Techade: The Open Group India Awards, the Open Group In-Person Summit in Houston, TX, and an Open Group event in China. These events, along with partnerships with Forrester for the Technology and Innovation Summits, provide valuable opportunities for professionals to stay informed and engaged with the latest developments in enterprise architecture.
